We have not blogged in over a month and our goal is to now blog daily.  These are some of the highlights of February in Room 191 (we will post pictures later):
1. We worked on Position and Motion in Science and completed a design project.  Our design project was creating a vehicle that had 4 wheels, 2 axles and a body.  The design needed to be sturdy and able to move down a ramp.  There were some awesome creations!
2. We went to East Gate Lodge to visit our seniors buddies.  It was reading month at BEYS, so we brought our reading boxes and read to our buddies.  We also made clay pinch pots and once they are fired and glazed we will bring them back to our buddies.  For snacktime, we made our senior buddies fruit kabobs.  We ended our afternoon by singing "One Love" by Bob Marley and saying our good byes until our next visit!
3.  We had an awesome Valentine's party and 100's Day.  Some of the activities included bringing a 100 collection from home and estimating/measuring the length, area and perimeter that our collection covered.  We also played some dice games with the hundred charts and we made portraits of what we think we will look like when we're 100 years old.
4.We invited an elder to our classroom and did an aboriginal feather craft.
IN FEBRUARY, NO ONE RECEIVED AN AMBER SLIP!!  WAY TO GO!!

The grade two students missed their spelling test due to last Friday's school closure (cold day) so we had the test today.  It was really nice to see that everyone was prepared and did very well. In math we worked on the doubles strategy for addition and subtraction.  We did hands on activities in science today using hoola hoops and bean bags to demonstrate positional and movement words.  Abby read "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss.

Last Thursday we had a great time at East Gate Lodge visiting our senior buddies.  The students played bingo, created a snowman scene out of plasticene and made "Snow Icecream".  The icecream was awesome. The recipe is on a the sidebar.

Ms. Kuzmack, our student teacher was in today and will be every Friday until April.  In April, she will be with us daily for 4 weeks.  Today, we learned a new "Doubles" song in math.  We had our spelling tests and there were many students with 100%!  New words for next week are posted on the sidebar, however; the grade one students will not have another test for 2 weeks.  This afternoon, we continued working on our community project. We should have our community completed and displayed in the library by Tuesday, January 22nd.

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a fun-filled, healthy holiday with family and friends.  Our first week back has been a busy one in Room 191.  Students have learned about different ways that people celebrate ringing in the New Year.  They have written individual resolutions on something that they want to learn or do differently in 2013. Students have also started designing and building a "community", including important places and community workers.  This project will complete the Social Studies unit that Miss Kuzmack, our student teacher had taught in Nov./Dec.
For those parents who are receiving this posting for the first time, I would like to suggest that you sign on to our blog occasionally to check out the side bars that contain important dates and messages. When we send out our posts, these pages do not appear.
